I have been following up with REITs development in Malaysia in this blog.
Interestingly, many Malaysian companies are now on the bands wagon of establishing REIT as part of their corporate strategy. (Refer to the reasons in my earlier article)
Compared to Singapore, as at 22/8/06, the below statistic showed Singapore has 13 Reits compared to Malaysia 8 Reits. Malaysia has been faring quite well despite the tax disadvantage suffered by non resident unit holders of Malaysian REIT.[hopefully, the budget will changed this].
Incidentally, very recently Kuwait Finance House has also gone ahead with discussion with the government linked companies particularly those with massive real estate and plantation land bank to create REIT so as to invite large investors from the Middle East. Hopefully with this move and establishing Islamic Reit would bolster the number of REITs in Malaysia.
